Altay - the Land of Tourism

":a tourist will find in Altay an abundant source of aesthetic delight in unusual for a dweller of plains and steppes combinations of dark forests and foamy mountain streams, dazzling snow-covered peaks and bright flowery alpine meadows, the deep blue vault of heaven being toppled over it all".
V.V.Sapozhnikov, a prominent Altay explorer.

As to the appellation 'Altay' itself, which many experts interpret as 'altyn-tau' (meaning golden mountains) or 'ala-tau' - motley mountains, V.V.Radlov, an orientalist and a specialist in Turkic philology, construes it as a junction of two words: 'al' and 'taiga', which would mean something like 'high rocky mountains'.
Reference: The autonomous republic of Altay borders upon Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, Russian autonomies Tuva and Khakass, the Altay territory and Kemerovo region.
Area - 92 000 sq. km; population - 204 800. National structure: Altaians (native altaian folk) - 31%, Russians - 60%, Kazakhs - 6%. Capital: Gorno-Altaisk. Administrative division: one town, 10 rural districts (aimaks), 248 settlements.
In December 1998 the region of the Altay mountains was entered into the list of most valuable cultural and natural areas of the world by the International Center for Preservation and Supervision (UNESCO List). The nature or the region is bright and peculiar. Nowhere else on the planet could one find zones so limited in area and so rich in landscape variety and contrast. Among marvelous relief shapes are high terraces of the Katun river, unique in their charms and greatness. Alpine relief of the territory is inimitable. A true chef-d'oeuvre of the Altay is the Belukha mountain, the highest peak in Siberia (4506 m above sea-level). By almost 1000 meters it rises above the nearby mountain ranges, some of these reaching out to Mongolia and China. A remarkable feature of the Altay are its valleys, first of all those of the Katun and the Chulyshman rivers. These flow in deep narrow canyons comparable to the illustrious Grand Canyon in America. Particularly scenic is the Chulyshman valley, adorned with numerous falls of the tributaries. The pearl of the Altay is Lake Teletskoye (area - 230 sq. km, up to 325 meter deep), which is nicknamed 'the smaller Baikal' for its crystal-clear water, mountain setting and rich animal kingdom.
Attraction of the Altay for tourists is immense primarily due to its natural and climatic conditions. Their breadth is the reason why this is the only region in Russia where there are all means for any sort of trips in every degree of difficulty.
Localities where people settled in ancient times accumulated their culture century by century. This process was briefly defined by Nikolai Rerikh: "If you want to find the most beautiful place, seek after the most ancient'. One of such localities he did find in Altay where his soul craved for till the end of his time. Picturesque Altaic foothills and mountains have stored the culture of the human race from pithecanthropuses to the present days.

Equestrian Tourism

Year after year the horse tourism in Altay enjoys ever wider popularity. Horse tours are primarily attractive thanks to one peculiarity of horse-riding, that is a diminished exercise stress. Riding involves all the skeletal muscles and inner organs of a horseman and is thus beneficial to one's health. Besides, a rider can any time dismount and walk along, measuring out physical effort. Still another advantage: horse-riding is accessible to any healthy person of any age. Rate of a group's movement virtually doesn't depend on the fitness of separate riders, which favors friendly and agreeable atmosphere in the group. At the same time the Altaic horse is very good at cross-country, making accessible almost any mountainous locality. And so horse tourists can travel far from settlements, which furthers a closer contact with virginal and inimitable nature of the Altay mountains, making holidays rich and wholesome.

Aquatic Tourism

In the recent years exactly the water touring has been most intensely gaining popularity in Altay among the admirers of sporting holidays. The number of those anxious to raft down a mountain stream grows every year. Altay with its variety of rivers makes for tours of every degree of difficulty (max. - 6). There are over 20 000 streams and brooks in Altay, their joint length exceeding 62 000 km. Most of these are rough and impetuous. Streams in Altay are an inescapable scenery feature, they 'persecute' the wayfarers relentlessly. But whatever stream you may choose for your rafting trip, thunderstruck with the glory of the surroundings you are sure to be in any case.

"The Middle Katun"

This tour of a relatively short duration you are dead certain to find impressive to the utmost. The rafting takes place in the middle length of the chief waterway of the mountainous Altay - the Katun. This section of the river has concentrated most of the earnest obstacles such as the rapids Ilgumen, the Kadrinsky 'tube', the Shabash, the Teldekpen among others.
Mighty rapids, constantly changing view, pungency of perceptions - this is what you are to experience while travelling this route. Here you'll try out a field 'blackwise' bath, taste appetizing fish dishes from the Altaic species taimen and grayling (salmon family, Salmonidae).

  • Duration - 8 days. Rafting - 5 days.

"Chuya - Katun"

Rafting the two most popular and yet so unlike rivers of the Altay - the Chuya and the Katun - is an opportunity to try one's strength. The Chuya (the right tributary of the Katun) is a winding mountain stream with rapids named 'Storm petrel', 'Hippopotamus', 'turbine', 'Horizon', which are hard to go through in terms of technique and which are of the degrees of difficulty 4 and 5. The Chuya is a site of regular Russian Cup aquatic all-round competitions. The Katun - the prime waterway of the mountainous Altay - will get you dumbfounded with its magnificence and power of rapids of difficulty classes 3 and 4.
Having set out to this route you'll be overwhelmed with emotions and flooded by adrenaline. All along the way you'll be backed by highly skilled guides who'll see to your safety, making your holidays unforgettable and eventful. You are to find out what a field 'blackwise' bath is, to taste delicious Altaic fishes - taimen and grayling (salmon family, Salmonidae) and, with a bit of luck, native Altaic lamb dishes.

Automobile Tour (Jeep-Safari)

"Big Drive"

This tour is an overall view of the splendor and incomparability of the Altay mountains. For it drags in Lake Teletskoye, rivers the Biya, the Chulyshman, the Bashkaus, the Chuya, the Katun, the waterfalls the Korbu and the Chulchinsky (160 m high). The alpinist camp Ak-Tru (2150 m above sea-level, the epicenter of the apprehensible earthquake 2003), the Denis caverns, relics of most ancient civilizations that inhabited the land of Altai will not be left out either. Passes the Ulagansky, the Katuyaryk, the Yabogan, the Chike-Taman (1700 m) are to be overcome on the way as well. But the very stunning places are not to be accessed that effortlessly. Lack of passable roads, overflows of streams, nature whims, to name only few of the hindrances for the travelers to pay heed to.
All in all, having embarked on this adventurous tour you'll be unavoidably swept along with the avalanche of impressions. And - throughout the route you'll have to keep your camcorders busy.

  • Duration - 10 days.
  • Day's drives - 3 to 6 hours.
  • Length: car stretch - 980 km, launch outing - 80 km; tracking (hiking mountain paths - a bright stroke to the full picture).
  • Group strength: 5 tourers at the least, 12 at the most.
